Ski Touring Explorer Day

DSC02713.jpg

The explorer courses take you further into the Backcountry. These are big days on the hill where we seek out the best available terrain, even if it means a long approach.

This freedom to travel further allows us to plan new tours that even the seasoned backcountry skier may not have visited. It is perfect if you are up for a challenge and are already familiar with the areas we visit on our journey days. It may also suit people who are confident and able to operate independently in the mountains but who do not have the time to follow the conditions and plan a more complex tour.

This is a physically and technically demanding day so please read the course prerequisites before booking. You should also have all of your own equipment and be proficient in using it. The full kit list is here. If in doubt take a look at our Journey day instead.

The 2 day option is two separate days on the hill and does not include accommodation, you need to find accommodation in or around Aviemore.

On occasion we may suggest that you purchase a ski touring uplift pass so as to skip the first climb. Currently these cost £11. We would arrange this and invoice you afterwards.

We meet at 8:30am to arrange equipment and aim to be moving by 9am. We are normally back by around 6pm or 5pm early season.

Location: near Aviemore, wherever conditions are best

PRE-REQUISITES

You need to be a confident black run and off piste skiing who has experience dealing with all the types of snow we might come across (ice, windslab, sustruggi, neve, powder). Some slopes may be up to 35 degrees but we will only venture onto steeper terrain in safe, grippy spring snow conditions.

You should have a very good level of fitness. We will likley ascend over 1200metres of vertical on skis. You need to be happy with long approaches on foot, carrying your equipment.

You would need to be very familiar with all of your ski touring equipment.

Under 18s should not attend this course.

If you have had a long break from skiing please make sure you visit your local dry slope or try to get a day of uplift skiing before attending.
