Overview

£64 PER PERSON (£79 with ski touring skis and skins)
• Maximum 6 in a group
• Avalanche equipment can be provided free of charge
• Media will be shared with you after the course.

Prepare for your trip

You will need to bring your own ski boots (any will do), a rucksack big enough to carry an avalanche shovel, probe, skins, your spare clothing, your packed lunch and water. British BackCountry has six full ski touring set ups but availability depends on the requirements of the group. If you need to borrow skis then you need to bring your own boots and let us know the boot sole length in advance (you need to provide your own but normal alpine ski boots are fine, ski touring boots are however usually more comfortable and lighter).

There is a maintenance charge of £15 for hiring touring skis and skins. Avalanche equipment is also available free of charge and is necessary for the course.

Kit List: You will need to bring the following, but if any is a problem please let us know:

  • Ski touring skis, skins

  • Avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe

  • Ski poles

  • Ski boots

  • Gloves x2

  • Hat

  • Helmet (strongly recommended)

  • Ski crampons if you have them

  • Goggles (not too dark preferably)

  • Lunch

  • Water (don’t overdo it though as it’a heavy!)

  • Snacks

  • Head torch, if it is early in the season

  • Warm and waterproof clothing in layers

  • An extra warm layer in your bag

I will have an emergency shelter, first aid kit and camera, among other things. I will also be doing all the navigating so no need to bring a map and compass unless you wish to practise navigating.

PRE-REQUISITIES

You will need to be confident getting down a blue run and have a decent level of fitness. These courses normally stay on the front side of the mountain and the climbing is kept to a maximum of 500 vertical metres.

The focus of the day is on the skills needed to go on a ski touring journey, rather than a journey itself (please see 'Journey days' if you prefer to learn the skills on the move).

Children aged 15-18 can attend if their parent attends with them

CANCELLATION POLICY

A degree of flexibility is needed for ski touring in the highlands and the venue will be weather dependent. The aim for all of the courses is to go somewhere within three hours drive of the Central Belt (Glasgow-Edinburgh area). British BackCountry will only run courses on days where conditions are suitable for learning, and alternative dates will be offered if the decision is taken to cancel the course. Some routes may start from a ski area while others may start from a road. Where uplift is needed, but not available, the skills and coaching session will be delivered on a ski tour instead of a lift served day.
