Intoduction to Ski Touring

What is it?

An introduction to the skills needed to go ski touring.

Who is it for?

Competent skiers / snowboarders who can parallel ski well on a red run with experience of skiing in a variety of snow conditions.

A good level of fitness as the vertical ascent will be around 800metres in the day.

Intermediate Ski Touring

What is it?

A guided ski touring journey, with skills learnt or refreshed on the move.

Who is it for?

Competent black run skiers / snowboarders with experience of riding in a variety of snow conditions.

A good level of fitness as the vertical ascent will be around 1000metres in the day.

You should have had 1 day of ski touring experience (some skinning) so you have a basic understanding of how ski touring equipment and avalanche safety equipment (a transceiver, shovel & probe) works.

We also offer a journey day where we focus on teaching navigation and avalanche avoidance. This is for people who are looking to become more independent on the mountain.

Advanced Ski Touring

What is it?

Big days out on skis, seeking out the best conditions available, moving fast and covering as much ground as possible

Who is it for?

Competent black run / off piste skiers with previous ski touring experience.

A very good level of fitness is needed as the vertical ascent will likely be around 1500metres in the day. There may also be long traverses and approaches on foot.

You should have your own ski touring equipment, ice axe and crampons and avalanche safety equipment, and know how to use it.

EQUIPMENT: We can provide avalanche search and rescue equipment free of charge. We have a limited selection of ski touring skis and skins available but do not provide ski touring boots. Tiso, Ellis Brigham and Cairngorm Mountain Sports in Aviemore offer full ski touring equipment rentals. We do not provide splitboards but TSA sometimes have availability.
