Ski Touring Journey
SKI TOURING JOURNEY:
Location: Cairn Gorm, or nearby
The Ski Touring Journey is an opportunity to learn or refresh skills whilst on the move. We choose the best terrain available on the day, usually covering around 1000metres of vertical ascent total, and making three different descents when possible. This course is for people who have ski toured at least once before.
Ski touring skis are available but you need to provide your own boots. We can provide avalanche safety equipment. Snowboarders can attend but need to provide their own splitboard. More details here. The full kit list is here.
The 2 day option is two separate days on the hill and does not include accommodation, you need to find accommodation in or around Aviemore. Some suggestions are included in the FAQ.
On occasion we may suggest that the normal journey group purchase a ski touring uplift pass so as to skip the first climb. Currently these cost £11. We would arrange this and invoice you afterwards.
We meet at 8:30am to arrange equipment and aim to be moving by 9am. We are normally back by around 4pm.

PRE-REQUISITES
You will need to be confident getting down a black run and have a good level of fitness. It is likely we will ascend around 1000vertical metres so imagine climbing a munro but with a bit more weight on your feet. It is hoped that the first ascent should not take more than two hours, although there will likely be at least two climbs in the day.
You should have had 1 day of ski touring experience (some skinning) so you have a basic understanding of how ski touring equipment and avalanche safety equipment (a transceiver, shovel & probe) works.
Both the ascent and descent will normally be less than 30 degrees, but the snow conditions may be variable.
You should be happy to ski in unpredictable and changeable snow, although tactics to help tackle this will be covered in the course.
Children aged 15-18 can attend if their parent attends with them
If you have had a long break from skiing please make sure you visit your local dry slope or try to get a day of uplift skiing before attending.
